The John Muir Project

Jim McCrain, Producer/Director

Jim is a long-time "user" of the great outdoors. Born in Oregon and growing up in rural north-Texas, Jim has had ample opportunities to discover the wonders of nature. Camping, hiking, playing and working outside were "natural" for him. In his mid-twenties, he embarked on a series of long-distance hiking expeditions that would eventually take him around the world. From the mountains of California, the heights of Denali (Alaska), the jungles and forests of New Zealand, and the glaciers of Greenland, Jim has experienced the wilderness as few others have.

After graduating college with Master's degrees in history and museum administration, Jim used his training as a Museum Director and Curator for 10 years. Then, in 2001, he gave it all up to start filming his wilderness expeditions, with the goal of educating others about our stewardship responsibilities for the environment. His love of nature, passion for history, and environmental responsibility soon lead to the idea of creating a video project based on the life of John Muir.

Jim currently works as a free-lance video producer and director in the Dallas, Texas region. He has worked on projects that have been shown state-wide, ranging from political commercials to the Dallas Cowboys. He has also worked on feature-film projects, television shows, museum films, and documentaries. The John Muir Biography and the accompanying Sierra Nevada hiking video are his first two totally independent full-length projects.
